Being brought up as a Christian in a non-Christian environment is both challenging and devastating. Growing up on the east side of Atlanta is among the experiences that have had an enormous impact on my life. As a Christian child, the church taught me the best values that will make me a better believer not only during my young years, but even later during adulthood. The external environment in the east of Atlanta is not ideal for a Christian upbringing, especially for a child whose character is based on Christian teachings. For instance, the rampant criminal activities and bad peer influences make it hard to live a typical Christian life. My close friends were involved in such unethical behaviors like illegal drugs abuse and gang activities. Although they would often persuade me to follow their ways, I maintained a resilient character through prayers and dedication to serve God for Psalms 46:1 says "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble" (Cambridge Bible, 2018).

The movie Saving Private Ryan

The movie Saving Private Ryan portrays on the example of the main character a true image of living a Christian life in a non-Christian society. Private Jackson, who is the best shot in the unit, is a staunch Christian, who is trying to remain committed amidst all the atrocities in a battlefield. The war surrounding Jackson symbolizes the hostile environment in the East of Atlanta. Similarly to the character, I always prayed for God's guidance and protection. Friendship Community Church in college park, GA, has been the source of my spiritual strength, and up to now, I always go there for fellowship. Although living among non-believers is challenging to a Christian, I knew that I will win, for Philippians 4:3 says "I can do all this through Him who gives me strength" (Cambridge Bible, 2018).
