The Death Penalty is Irrational and Discriminatory

I am impressed by the video of Dr. David Garland on his perspectives on death penalty. The death penalty is a politically controversial topic that has been subject to the discussion across all platforms. David Garland claims that the death penalty is irrational and discriminatory. He termed it a peculiar practice because it does not serve the intended purpose. He continues that the death penalty is there as the part of the constitution but it only works in a certain class of people. It contributes to the endless drama among the media, police, and prosecutors. According to him, innocent victims are been charged with this capital punishment so that a judge can act like a hero and something of the same sort.

My perspective on the death penalty has been shifting over time. At the beginning of my schooling, I used to think that the death penalty is a good sentence where a person should be punished in direction proportion of the murder. However, I agreed with David Garland that death penalty is peculiar because there are many people who are sentenced to death without any valid representation. I agree that the system we should trust is not usually trustable. People are often sentenced to a crime that they did not commit or is discriminatory and irrational. The death penalty is not always deterrence or solution to crime. There are many avenues that people should be educated on how to be responsible people in society rather than the death penalty. It is a proactive way of dealing with crime. Unfortunately, given the recent political developments and discourse of the topic, the abolition of the death penalty may not happen soon.
