Film and reading response (Carnage, Roman Polanski 2011)

Roman Polanski's film Carnage and All is a dark comedy set in New York that critiques civic behavior that is portrayed as being universal, inhumane, and a sign of the times. Inhumane personalities have been featured in the movie: John threw the animal out the window. People that are put in specific situations either grow aggressive or adapt to their surroundings as a form of defense against their foes. In the movie, the couple is shown squabbling and blaming one another for the altercation between their boys. There is a heightened attack among the couples; Penelope is seen not to control the nauseating scenario until she vomits. Polanski has mainly concentrated on the following aspects to citizens not only the New Yorker but also the world: inhumanity and hypocrisy.

Polanski film has satirized humanity,” what begins as a seemingly inn coccus faculty mixer ends with all the four principals bereft of nearly all ties to a residual humanity”. The couples are initially seen being friendly before the making irritating comments that cause chaos as portrayed by the Nancy vomiting since she could not take more of the nauseating scenario (Polanski, 2011). The civility of the characters is in question as depicted by Penelope calling Nancy’s son a snitch and in turn Nancy destroys the tulips “ wicked commentary on the horror of civility and more specifically, on the horror of bourgeois domesticity”. John in the later park scene is seen to throw the hamster-the pet out on the street which an indication of symbolic sacrificial victim “the rodent embodies (down there, out there) a “possibility of correction”. As the film approaches to the end, the characters are seen to have uncivilized and an insult to the human race “Nobody comes off in positive light”.

Hypocrisy has been well depicted in this film, host two wealthy couples who meet to discuss the playground fight between their sons. These liberal, intelligent and intellectual individual is supposed to handle this issue with lot prudence. These individual are shown to have camouflaged during the as their drinks before elucidating their real characters “‘it’s simply a matter of peeling away those layers of artifice” their intelligence is then comparable to that an infant. The author of film has also been a portrayer of hypocrisy “Polanski film has an unusually high number of cuts. My impression is that these cuts minimize alignment with characters’ viewpoints,” These cuts have shown to bring out the truth about several things: cause of fight of the sons and couples’ real character. ‘I think you’re right that the camera resists guiding us toward deeper identification with the characters and their respective viewpoints”. The apartment arguing is comparable to interview of politician and the anchor “like one of those ritualized interviews with the politician where the anchor’s mode of complicity is to make a show of aggressive quizzing that never threats the status quo”. The couples are trying to blame each other of their sons’ misconduct (Polanski, 2011).

Polanski’s concern with the rotten society depicted in New York, which is a representation of the world due to the consistent hypocrisy that perpetuated from one generation to the next. He also highlights the decay of humanity that is the major cause of every evil in the world.
