European nations fleeing to the New World

European nations fled to the New World for a variety of purposes. The majority of them came in search of land and wealth to take back to their home countries. Immigration in America dates back to 1492 when Christopher Columbus explored the New World. This discovery sparked a power struggle between the three most powerful nations at the time, Spain, France, and Britain. The immigrants set out across the Atlantic. The Spanish were the first to establish themselves, followed by the French and, later, the English and Dutch. This article is concerned with differences that led to the entrance of newcomers to the New World and account for those differences.

The Spanish conquest and military power

The Christopher 's crossing of the Atlantic Ocean supported by Spain was among the initial phase associated with European entrance in the New World. He was trying to establish a new route leading to India together with China which was referred to as 'the Indies.' Spanish did establish their empire in the New World and was more concerned with having a military power.

French exploration for the Northwest Passage

French went to North America as they were searching for a Northwest Passage which could have led them to Asia. In the year 1524, an explorer by the name Giovanni da Verrazano was given the task to locate for the Northwest passage across North America going to India. Jacques Cartier followed him in the year1534, and he explored St. Lawrence River. In the year 1562, Jean Ribault led a voyage to explore Florida. However, the French were pushed out of Florida by the Spanish from where they concentrated on North and West. In the year 1608, Samuel de Champlain established a fort at Quebec from where he made exploration to the regions North to Nova Scotia, Port Royal, and South to Cape Cod. They went ahead to establish ports in Detroit (1701), Michilimackinac (1671), Montreal (1642), Fort St. Joseph (1691). Within that time, they put more focus on other instant riches which included land, fish, furs together with converting the faith of the natives they found. In the year 1663, the king of France directly controlled the New France, but the empire neither reached the wealth attained by the New Spain nor the growth realized by the British colonies.

English interest in exploration and colonization

Before the reign of Queen Elizabeth, the English did not have much interest in exploration as they were most concerned with trade across Europe. It is during the mid-sixteenth century that they recognized advantages of trading with the East. In 1560 Martin Frobisher was enlisted to search for a route to India. It is the year 1576 and the year 1578 that Frobisher and John Daxis made their exploration across the Atlantic Ocean. Queen Elizabeth gave Sir Walter and Sir Humphrey charter allowing them to colonize America. Gilbert made two trips towards the New World where he did not make to establish a military post. After a year, Raleigh did send a voyage who explored a territory which was named Virginia named after Virgin Queen. In the year 1585, he sponsored another voyage which went to explore Chesapeake Bay Region. By 1700, the English took the lead in North America colonization. They established settlements throughout the Atlantic coast and also the West Indies. The British mainly claimed to have come for religious freedom. However, they went ahead to force their religion on the natives.

Dutch focus on trade in the New World

Netherlands was concerned with gaining commercial power and for that reason welcomed exploration. In the year 1609, Hudson Henry led a voyage to the New World for the firm called Dutch East India. From there, they claimed the region around Hudson River up to Albany. In the year 1614, the New Netherland Firm gained a grant from the Dutch empire for the region between Virginia and New France. After a decade, they established another trading corporation which was called the West India Company. Groups of colonists were settled at Fort Orange and also Manhattan Island. The Dutch mainly focused on trade rather than religious conversions.
