About Social Media and Interpersonal Relationship

In terms of how people interact with one another, social media is essential to people's lives. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp are often used by people to communicate, and they have served as the foundation for many different types of interactions. The use of social media has made it harder for people to communicate with one another.

The first assumption is that social media has changed how individuals physically communicate. Social media has significantly hampered people's ability to physically converse, which is essential to interpersonal relationships. People are communicating more frequently online through social media in ways that do not require in-person meetings. People can chat via the social media applications which do not need people meeting physically. Communication through the social media applications makes it hard to understand the interpersonal roles that people play when it comes to physical communication such as the presence of the facial expressions among others (Lundy and Drouin, 2016).

The second premise is that social media affects how people communicate their feelings. Lack of interpersonal communication affects how people tend to communicate their feelings with each other. Through social media, people superficially communicate their feelings because there is the lack of physical attachment when it comes to how people communicate their feelings. For instance, there is no hugging or embrace when it come to social media communication (Lundy and Drouin, 2016).

The third premise is the issue of lack of emotional communication amongst the people who communicate through the use of the social media. Social media deprives the people the chance to communicate their emotions towards each other. One is not able to show how they are emotionally affected. People who communicate through the use of the social media are a not able to portray their emotions regarding the issue that they are talking about at the time (Lundy and Drouin, 2016).

The fourth premise is that social media is a major hindrance when it comes to communicating the meaning of the issue that is being discussed. Social media denies individuals involved in communication the chance to communicate the meaning of what they say in a conversation articulately. There is the lack of comprehensiveness with each other hence affecting their interpersonal communication (Lundy and Drouin, 2016).

The fifth premise regarding the issue is that social media tends to affect how people bond with each other when it comes to communication. Interpersonal relationship dictates that there is the need for people to bond whenever they are communicating. Hence, social media has a negative role when it comes to how people bond whenever they are communicating (Lundy and Drouin, 2016).

The last premise is that social media affects the nonverbal communications that people are involved in. Nonverbal communication is better understood when one is communicating with another person in a physical manner which is important when it comes to the interpersonal communication. If one is not able to understand the nonverbal communication, then the conversation might not be effective (Lundy and Drouin, 2016).

The premises that have been covered in the paper are critical when it comes to supporting the main idea of the paper in that social media affects interpersonal relationships amongst the people. The premises have demonstrated the effects that social media has when it comes to interpersonal communication.
