Critical Thinking and its Obstacles

Critical thinking may be described as the capacity to think, analyze, assess, and critically make decisions about a problem. Decisions taken, however, should not be affected by the assumptions or desires of the individual. There are different obstacles to rational thought, such as racism, paranoia, laziness, bias, and insufficient context knowledge, among others (Kirby & Goodpaster, 2007).

Obstacle 1: Lack of Adequate Background Information

In addition, several steps have been taken with a view to resolving the obstacles faced in logical thought, such as asking for facts and being open-minded. Therefore, this article would explain two obstacles to critical thought as well as how to resolve them. Besides, lack of adequate background information is one of the obstacles that influence my critical thinking (Kirby & Goodpaster, 2007). For instance, an individual cannot make an inferred decision if they lack enough information concerning the issue they have to make an objective judgment. Therefore, there is a necessity to get all the relevant information for better interpretation, analysis as well as an explanation. A person can overcome this barrier by inquiring and obtaining all the background information as well as the relevant evidence concerning an issue. The information can be obtained through reading purposely but not selectively, having an open mind while reading as well as taking a note on every point concerning the issue.

Obstacle 2: Biasness

Also, biasness is another barrier that greatly influences my creative thinking. Whenever reading about an issue that I will finally make a judgment, I always have a conceived opinion. The preconception that I possess is influenced by emotions, general perception, a culture that I have been brought up in among others. However, the preconceptions can time be favorable or unfavorable depending on the issue being discussed (Paul & Elder, 2007). I can overcome this barrier by having an open mind which is flexible in considering the alternative perspectives, truth-seeking mind that is willing to face perception and reconsider views.

Conclusion

In conclusion, critical thinking encounters several obstacles such as inadequate background information, bias, prejudice among others. However, the mentioned barriers can be faced by individuals having an open mind, reading purposely, enquiring all the relevant information as well as avoiding biases.
